Four Renoir Paintings Stolen in French Museum Break-In as Police Search for Suspects

French authorities are investigating a major art theft after four paintings were taken from the Renoir Museum in Cagnes-sur-Mer, France, early Tuesday morning.

Police say two intruders entered the museum at approximately 5:48 a.m. local time on September 8 and removed artworks from its Renoir collection. Their escape was interrupted when the museum’s security alarm was activated, prompting police to respond to the scene.

Burglars Entered Through Museum Garden

According to Cagnes-sur-Mer Mayor Bryan Masson, the suspects gained access by cutting through part of the museum’s garden fence before entering the building through the ground floor.

The pair reportedly appeared to have planned the operation carefully and were equipped with tools that included an electric knife and a hacksaw. Reports also indicate that the suspects were wearing combat-style clothing.

Once the alarm was triggered, both the National Police and Municipal Police were alerted.

Two Paintings Abandoned During Escape

Police officers reached the museum in less than five minutes, according to Mayor Masson.

The rapid police response appears to have disrupted the burglars’ plans. While escaping through the museum grounds, the suspects reportedly dropped two of the artworks they had taken.

The abandoned paintings were subsequently recovered from the museum gardens.

However, authorities confirmed that two Renoir paintings remain missing and are still being sought by investigators.

Missing Renoir Works Worth Millions

The stolen artworks came from the museum’s collection of twelve pieces associated with renowned French artist Pierre-Auguste Renoir.

Among the paintings reported to have been targeted are:

• Coco Lisant
• Young Girl at the Well

The artworks involved in the theft are estimated to have a combined value of approximately $10.5 million.

Because two paintings were recovered, investigators are now concentrating their efforts on locating the remaining two missing works and identifying the people responsible.

The suspects managed to escape before officers could apprehend them.

Previous Renoir Painting Theft in Italy

The French museum robbery comes months after another high-value art theft involving a Renoir painting.

On March 22, four masked individuals reportedly stole a Renoir work along with paintings associated with Paul Cézanne and Henri Matisse from the Magnani Rocca Foundation in Italy.

Those stolen artworks were also estimated to be worth more than $10 million, according to previous reports.
