First-Class Passenger Restrained After Midair Outburst Forces Emergency Landing

An American Airlines flight was diverted to Maryland after a male passenger allegedly became violent and verbally abusive during the journey, prompting crew members and fellow travelers to restrain him before the aircraft landed.

Disruption Erupts During American Airlines Flight

American Airlines Flight 618 was traveling from Dallas Fort Worth International Airport to Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey on Thursday, September 3.

About two hours after takeoff, the flight crew reportedly faced a serious disturbance involving a passenger who was described by the airline as a “disruptive customer.”

According to reports, the situation escalated quickly, with the passenger allegedly shouting offensive racial and homophobic slurs and physically confronting people aboard the aircraft.

Passenger Allegedly Assaults Travelers

Passengers said the situation suddenly turned chaotic after the man began yelling.

Juan Mejia, who was seated a few rows away, said he witnessed the passenger allegedly putting his hands around another man’s neck and attacking him.

Another passenger, Richard Olenick, alleged that the man directed a racial slur toward a flight attendant.

Mejia and Olenick said they attempted to help along with members of the flight crew, but the passenger allegedly became aggressive toward those who intervened.

Man Restrained in First Class

As the disturbance continued, the passenger was eventually restrained in his first-class seat.

According to reports from CBS News and CNN, crew members and passengers used duct tape to secure him to the seat, while zip ties were placed around his hands.

The restraint reportedly remained in place for approximately 15 minutes while the aircraft prepared to land.

Mejia said the passenger bit his hand during the struggle. He also claimed the man appeared to have injured himself and was bleeding from cuts.

Flight Diverted to Baltimore

Because of the incident, the aircraft was diverted from its planned route and made an emergency landing at Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport.

Once the plane arrived, law enforcement officers boarded the aircraft and removed the passenger.

The flight was then allowed to continue toward Newark after the situation had been handled.

Passenger Arrested at Airport

The FBI confirmed that the man was arrested after the aircraft landed in Maryland.

He was reportedly booked on state charges by the Maryland Transportation Authority Police.

The FBI said it was conducting interviews to establish what happened and would consult with the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Maryland regarding the possibility of federal charges.
