Officials emphasized that the department has never requested donations or payments connected to the investigation and urged the public not to scan suspicious QR codes or send money to unknown individuals.

Sheriff’s Office Confirms Investigation-Related Scam

According to the sheriff’s office, the fake campaign appears to misuse public concern surrounding Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance.

Sheriff Chris Nanos confirmed that investigators became aware of the scam after a truck was seen traveling through Tucson displaying an altered image of a masked woman alongside messages encouraging people to contribute financially to the investigation.

Authorities stressed that anyone encountering these misleading advertisements should report them immediately and avoid interacting with the payment requests.

Previous Fraud Case Linked to the Investigation

This is not the first criminal scheme associated with Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance.

Earlier this month, Derrick Callella, 42, of California admitted guilt to two counts of harassment involving telecommunications.

Investigators said Callella contacted Nancy Guthrie’s family through phone calls and text messages regarding a fraudulent Bitcoin transfer on February 4, adding further distress to an already devastating situation.
