How the Incident Occurred

According to law enforcement officials from the Cobb Police Department, the event took place on April 22 at Brumby Elementary School in the Terrell Mill Road area at approximately 7:59 a.m.

Investigators stated that a 13-year-old girl was positioned behind the steering wheel of a 2017 Chrysler Pacifica, which was stationary in a designated school drop-off lane. Inside the vehicle were two additional young children.

Authorities reported that the vehicle unexpectedly moved forward, striking Shumeka Johnson, who was standing in front of it at the time. The impact reportedly caused the vehicle to come to rest on top of her before it shifted into reverse and collided with a parked, unoccupied car.

Johnson suffered serious physical injuries and was immediately transported to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment.

Legal Action and Investigation

Following the investigation, a criminal warrant for Shumeka Johnson’s arrest was issued on June 3 by the Magistrate Court of Cobb County.

Police documents indicate that Johnson is accused of allowing her 13-year-old daughter to operate the vehicle, despite the clear risks involved. Authorities stated that this decision placed the minor in a dangerous situation and significantly contributed to the incident.

The arrest affidavit further alleged that Johnson consciously disregarded a substantial and unjustifiable risk, which deviated from the level of caution expected from a reasonable person under similar circumstances.

Judge Charles Chesbro reviewed the case and determined that probable cause existed for the arrest, subsequently approving the warrant. Her bond was set at $300.
