Investigators Say No Evidence Points to Political Attack

Police investigating the killing of former British politician Ann Widdecombe have stated that there is currently no evidence indicating her death was politically motivated, despite ongoing inquiries into the case.

Detectives from Devon and Cornwall Police confirmed they are continuing to question a 28-year-old British man who was arrested in Rotherham, South Yorkshire. Authorities also said they are not searching for any additional suspects, believing the individual currently in custody is the focus of the investigation.

Former MP Found Dead at Devon Home

Ann Widdecombe, 78, was discovered dead at her residence in Haytor, Devon, on Thursday after suffering severe injuries.

Following the discovery, officers launched a major homicide investigation. A large-scale police operation later led investigators to a property in Rotherham, where forensic specialists and armed officers carried out extensive searches.

The arrest was made shortly after 9:00 p.m. BST on Saturday with assistance from Counter Terrorism Police North East and South Yorkshire Police, acting on behalf of Devon and Cornwall Police.

Police Remain Open to All Possible Motives

Assistant Chief Constable Matt Longman emphasized that investigators are keeping an open mind while examining every possible motive behind the killing.

However, he stressed that nothing uncovered so far suggests the attack was linked to politics or terrorism, adding that there is no indication of any wider threat to the public.

Officials also urged people to avoid spreading rumors or speculating about the motive, warning that doing so could interfere with the investigation and cause additional distress to the victim’s family.

Evidence Collection Continues

Police maintained a heavy presence at the Rotherham property throughout Sunday while crime scene investigators examined the location.

Witnesses reported seeing armed officers arrive before taking a man into custody. Neighbors described an unusually large police response, with multiple police vehicles surrounding the residence.

Media reports also suggested that CCTV footage may have captured a man placing what appeared to be a wooden object inside a red vehicle before leaving the area on the morning of the alleged attack. Authorities reportedly seized a red car believed to be relevant to the investigation.

Investigators noted that Rotherham is approximately 270 miles (430 kilometers) from Widdecombe’s home in Devon.

Public Asked to Continue Assisting Investigation

Police revealed they have already received more than 120 pieces of information from members of the public following their appeal for assistance.

Investigators encouraged anyone who may have relevant information but has not yet spoken to officers to come forward as soon as possible.

Authorities also confirmed that an increased police presence will remain in the local community while the investigation continues.

Earlier Arrest No Longer Linked to Case

Detectives explained that a 26-year-old British man, arrested shortly after the investigation began, has been released after inquiries determined he was no longer connected to the case.

The current investigation is now centered on the 28-year-old suspect, who remains in police custody for questioning.

The death of Ann Widdecombe prompted tributes from political figures across the United Kingdom.

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer described her passing as a significant loss and encouraged people to rise above political differences.

Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch remembered Widdecombe as a spirited and fearless public figure, while Reform UK leader Nigel Farage praised her unwavering commitment to free speech.

Several senior members of Reform UK joined local residents at a memorial gathering in Haytor Vale to honor her life and legacy.
