Iran is reportedly regaining operational capacity at its underground missile installations after rapidly clearing debris and restoring access to previously sealed facilities. This development has sparked renewed debate over the effectiveness of U.S. and Israeli airstrike strategies aimed at disabling Tehran’s missile network.
According to satellite imagery analyzed by international observers, Iranian forces have been actively reopening tunnel entrances that were previously sealed during U.S. and Israeli strikes. Using basic construction machinery such as bulldozers and dump trucks, Iran has removed rubble, filled bomb craters, and restored access roads leading to multiple underground sites.
Out of 69 tunnel entrances targeted across 18 missile facilities, approximately 50 have reportedly been reopened. At several locations, damaged roads have also been repaired or repaved, enabling renewed access to underground storage and launch systems.
Defense analysts argue that while airstrikes have succeeded in temporarily restricting missile operations, they have not eliminated Iran’s long-term missile capability.
Experts note that Iran’s underground facilities, some located hundreds of meters beneath mountainous terrain, are extremely difficult to fully destroy using conventional bombing methods. As a result, efforts have largely focused on blocking entrances and damaging surface infrastructure rather than eliminating deeply buried stockpiles.
Despite these strikes, Iran is believed to still possess a significant reserve of long-range missiles stored underground, potentially numbering around 1,000 units.
Security specialists suggest that Iran’s missile system remains operational as long as launch crews and mobile platforms remain functional. Even if production facilities are disrupted, existing stockpiles can still be deployed.
Iran’s ability to rapidly restore damaged infrastructure using low-tech equipment has further highlighted the asymmetry between high-cost military strikes and relatively inexpensive reconstruction efforts.
Some defense experts argue that Iran’s missile program was designed over decades specifically to withstand aerial bombardment. Intelligence assessments suggest that Iran has already begun rebuilding drone production capabilities and restoring elements of its missile manufacturing infrastructure.
Officials have also acknowledged that previous expectations regarding the timeline for disabling Iran’s military reconstitution have been exceeded.
Analysts warn that continued reliance on airstrikes alone may not achieve long-term strategic objectives. While high-precision weapons can temporarily disrupt operations, Iran’s ability to restore infrastructure using basic engineering tools presents a persistent challenge.
Experts emphasize that this imbalance between destructive capability and rapid reconstruction may limit the overall effectiveness of conventional bombing campaigns.

The ongoing restoration of Iran’s underground missile infrastructure demonstrates both resilience and strategic depth in its military planning. Despite extensive aerial strikes aimed at disabling its capabilities, Iran’s rapid recovery efforts suggest that fully neutralizing its missile network remains a complex and unresolved challenge for Western military strategy.
