Shooting Incident Near the White House Raises Fresh Security Concerns

U.S. President Donald Trump has once again intensified calls for the completion of his proposed White House ballroom after a deadly shooting unfolded near the presidential complex on Saturday, May 23.

According to reports, a 21-year-old man identified as Nasire Best allegedly approached the White House perimeter carrying a firearm inside a bag. Authorities say he opened fire near the security gates, injuring two individuals before Secret Service agents responded with gunfire, killing the suspect at the scene.

Officials confirmed that President Trump was inside the White House during the incident but was unharmed.

Trump Says National Security Requires New Ballroom

Shortly after the shooting, Trump shared a statement emphasizing the importance of constructing what he described as a highly secure presidential ballroom.

In his public remarks, the president praised Secret Service officers and law enforcement for their rapid response while arguing that recent attacks highlight the urgent need for a fortified gathering space within the White House grounds.

Trump claimed the future ballroom would become one of the safest government event venues ever built in Washington, D.C., adding that the project is essential for protecting future presidents and national events.

Ballroom Project Continues Despite Delays

The controversial ballroom initiative originally began after the demolition of the East Wing in October 2025. Although the project has faced legal and procedural setbacks, Trump has repeatedly promoted it as a critical security upgrade rather than simply an architectural expansion.

The proposed structure is expected to cover nearly 90,000 square feet and now carries an estimated cost of approximately $400 million — nearly double earlier projections.

Earlier this month, Trump described the venue as “the most beautiful ballroom anywhere in the world” during a formal dinner event held in the Rose Garden. He also stressed that the building materials, including specially designed thick protective glass, would meet the highest modern security standards.

Previous Attack Also Fueled Trump’s Demands

The president previously renewed support for the ballroom after the shooting incident connected to the White House Correspondents’ Dinner at the Washington Hilton hotel in April.

Following that event, Trump repeatedly argued that official presidential gatherings require a safer and more controlled environment inside the White House complex itself.

Senate Republicans Push for Additional Funding

Meanwhile, Senate Republicans are reportedly attempting to approve nearly $1 billion in additional security funding connected to the stalled ballroom project and broader federal protection measures.

The funding effort became tied to a much larger $72 billion package intended for agencies including Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection.

Trump has continued insisting that a large portion of the ballroom’s construction expenses would ultimately come from private donors and corporate contributions rather than taxpayer money.
