A 17-year-old high-achieving student was killed after being shot while on his way to school in Chicago, in a violent incident that also left two other men injured.
The victim, 17-year-old Pedro Ramirez, was a junior at Tilden High School located near Canaryville. He was recognized as an honor roll student and held leadership roles in school sports, serving as captain of the soccer team and also participating in volleyball.
According to Chicago police and local reports, the shooting took place around 7:40 a.m. on Tuesday, May 26, in the Back of the Yards neighborhood. Ramirez was walking toward a bus stop to attend school when he was struck multiple times by gunfire.
Authorities stated that an unidentified suspect stepped out of a dark-colored SUV and opened fire, hitting three individuals during the incident.
Ramirez was transported to Comer Children’s Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
Two other men, aged 55 and 61, were also caught in the shooting while seated in a vehicle nearby. The 61-year-old sustained a gunshot wound to the back, while the 55-year-old was injured in the arm. Both victims were taken to Stroger Hospital in critical condition.
The Chicago Police Department confirmed that a person of interest has been taken into custody. However, officials have not yet disclosed any motive behind the shooting, and the investigation remains ongoing.
Ramirez’s mother, Eloisa Garcia, described the incident as life-altering and emotionally devastating, saying the family felt as if they were living through a nightmare.
His family partner also expressed shock over the early morning violence, emphasizing that he was simply heading to school when the tragedy occurred.
Close friends remembered him as deeply committed to education, recalling that he always insisted he would never miss school unless seriously ill or unable to continue.
Friends and community members described Ramirez as a bright and kind young man with a promising future. A fundraising page created to support funeral expenses highlighted his positive character, noting that he was helpful, well-loved, and made a lasting impact on those around him.
The community continues to mourn the loss of a teenager whose life was cut short far too early.
