According to local media reports, Mari was walking with her son and daughter toward their school transport stop on June 8 when she unexpectedly came across a wild elephant accompanied by its calf.

Due to heavy rainfall and dense fog in the area, visibility was significantly reduced, making it difficult for her to notice the approaching animals in time.

Authorities, citing the Kerala Forest Department, stated that the adult elephant suddenly charged at the woman after the encounter.

Emergency Response and Casualties

Hearing the distress calls, a passerby rushed to the scene and transported Mari to a nearby medical facility. However, doctors later confirmed that she had succumbed to her injuries.

Her 11-year-old son sustained serious injuries and was shifted to a government medical college hospital in Kottayam for advanced treatment. Her daughter escaped the attack without physical harm.

Official Response

The Kerala Forest Department stated that continuous alerts regarding elephant movement in the region had been issued earlier that same day, particularly through WhatsApp notifications to residents in vulnerable zones.

Local forest officials reported that approximately 17 elephants are currently moving in different herds across the area, increasing the risk of human–wildlife encounters.

Following the incident, rapid response teams have been deployed to monitor and drive wild elephants away from residential zones, especially during early morning and evening hours.
