Spielberg Discusses AI in New Podcast Appearance

Acclaimed filmmaker Steven Spielberg, aged 79, has shared his perspective on the use of artificial intelligence in the film industry during a recent podcast interview.

Speaking on the IMO Podcast hosted by Michelle Obama and Craig Robinson on May 27, Spielberg discussed his evolving thoughts on AI while promoting his upcoming film Disclosure Day.

Balanced View on Artificial Intelligence

During the conversation, Spielberg said he is still evaluating how artificial intelligence will be used in creative industries, stating that he remains undecided about its long-term impact.

He acknowledged that AI could be beneficial in several fields, including healthcare and education, where it may help solve complex problems and improve efficiency.

Strong Opposition to AI in Creative Writing

However, Spielberg made it clear that he does not support the use of AI as a substitute for human creativity in filmmaking or storytelling.

He explained that he disagrees with the idea of artificial intelligence acting as a “writer” in creative development, such as replacing human writers at a writing table.

According to him, creativity, emotion, and artistic expression cannot be replicated by algorithms, and he does not believe AI possesses true sentience or a “soul.”

AI as a Tool, Not a Creator

Spielberg emphasized that while AI can be useful for technical assistance—such as helping locate filming locations or supporting production design—it should remain strictly a supporting tool.

He stated that AI should not make creative decisions such as writing dialogue, designing scenes, or determining artistic direction in filmmaking.

He concluded that artificial intelligence should only function as part of a broader set of tools used by filmmakers, not as the final authority in creative decisions.

Industry-Wide Debate on AI Use

Spielberg’s remarks come amid ongoing debates in Hollywood regarding the role of AI in entertainment.

Several filmmakers and actors have recently expressed concerns about artificial intelligence replacing human creativity, while others acknowledge its usefulness as a production tool.

The issue has also reached industry institutions, with updated guidelines being introduced to address how AI-generated content may be considered in awards eligibility.

Upcoming Film Release

Steven Spielberg’s next film, Disclosure Day, starring Josh O’Connor and Emily Blunt, is scheduled for theatrical release on June 12.
